The Origins of Nomi

The origins of the name Nomi go back to the early Heian period (794-1185), when the newly established administration section of the Kaga country was founded as Nomi-district.  The public office was located in the village Nomi and it is probably from that central point where the Nomi administration and economy flourished.  The name Nomi is suggested to derive from “the wonderful ability to create” and “beautiful nature” and was seen as a suitable title to fit Kaga country’s new political and economic center, blessed with the Japan Sea and rich nature.

Nomi city was officially established on the 1st of February 2005 with the amalgamation of Neagari, Terai and Tatsunokuchi towns. Commencing at the same time of the Hakusan City merger, Nomi City became the 10th city of Ishikawa Prefecture. Situated between Komatsu and Kanazawa, it is blessed with a white sand coastline lined with green pines, a beautiful Hakusan mountain view and the Prefecture's largest river. As well as being rich in nature, it also houses some of the nation's prominent high-tech industries giving it a central role in technology within the Prefecture. Within the city there are many places to visit such as the Tatsunokuchi Onsen, Hideki Matsui’s baseball museum and is said to be the place of “Benkei’s apology” (from the famous Kabuki story Kanjincho).  In the surrounding areas there is the Kaga Onsen, Ataka ruins and many other famous tourist spots.
