Nomi-gun Kofun (Ancient Burial Tombs)
|
|
With a total length of 140m, stretching from the Akitsune mountain, there are approximately 80 tombs in the Nomi ancient burial site. For over 400 years continued usage of this burial site has led to various elaborate tomb furnishings, escaping theft and raiding by robbers. This historic area traces its roots way back to the 4th century. In this land that has been shaped by the Tedori river, ancients tombs are scattered all over the area like small islands floating in the sea. These ancient tombs are one of the prefecture’s cultural heritage sites, and as a key historical site for unlocking the history of ancient tombs they attract interest from all over Japan. Archaeological finds from ancient burial mounds are exhibited at the historical folklore museum and every year there a Kofun festival (ancient tomb festival) where various events are held.
